Keep Your Chimney Safe, Clean, and Up to Code
A chimney that doesn't get regular attention is a chimney that's working against you. Creosote builds up inside the flue, moisture seeps into the masonry, and small cracks turn into expensive problems—all while you assume everything's fine because the fire still lights. Here on the South Carolina coast, salt air, humidity, and seasonal storms accelerate that wear faster than most homeowners realize.
WilliamSmith Fireplaces provides Level I, II, and III chimney inspections, professional sweeping, liner repairs, cap installation, and waterproofing for homeowners across the Charleston area. With over 20 years of experience on the coast, our technicians know what to look for—and they know how to fix it right the first time.

Three Levels of Chimney Inspection
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 211) defines three levels of chimney inspection. The right level depends on your situation.
Level I Inspection
Recommended every year for chimneys in regular use. Your technician visually examines the readily accessible portions of the chimney exterior, interior, and the appliance connection to confirm everything is sound and free of obstructions.
Annual maintenance
Level II Inspection
Required when you change fuel type, reline the flue, replace an appliance, or buy or sell a home. Includes everything in a Level I plus accessible areas of attics, crawl spaces, and basements. A video scan of the interior flue surfaces is typically performed to identify cracks, deterioration, or buildup that isn't visible from the outside.
Property transfer & system changes
Level III Inspection
Called for when a Level I or II inspection reveals a suspected hazard that can't be fully evaluated without access to concealed areas. This may involve the removal of certain components of the building or chimney structure. A Level III is the most thorough inspection available and is typically reserved for serious safety concerns.
